Strathmore Road Methodist Church, Tyne and Wear

Integration is the goal

The members of the congregation at Strathmore Road Methodist Church wanted to do something to welcome Syrian refugees moving into the area. An invitation to the summer club led to three special community initiatives: a weekly drop in, where Syrian families can come along to chat and practice their English, a bicycle maintenance workshop and a regular football match.

The three separate projects have brought people together and the whole community is benefiting.

“For each of the three projects, volunteers have told us how much they’ve got out of it all. It’s really been a blessing for us as a church.”

The real lesson for us has been you’ve got to identify where the need is and then go out there and meet them. You can’t wait for people to come through the church doors.
